International Wheelchair Golf Open Championships

Empower Golf’s mission has always been to facilitate and promote golf at all levels of player ability and experience.

Having conducted over 200 Come and Try Golf clinics around the country during 2018, the latter part of the year saw Empower Golf’s support of elite golfers.

In July, Empower Golf’s head coach Lachy supported the Australian Deaf Golf Team as coach and team manager to an historic world championship in Ireland. In October, Empower supported the Invictus Games wider family at their Foundation Sport Golf Day. Finally in November, Empower Golf was part of a team of players who competed in the inaugural International Wheelchair Golf Open Championship (IWGOC) in Mallorca, Spain. Overall, 40 competitors from 20 different countries and 5 continents competed in the largest ever wheelchair tournament.

In the end, the Australian players exceeded expectations in tough conditions, including a longer than expected first round that saw play continue into darkness. Nick Taylor finished 3rd in the overall scratch tournament, Peter Hyden was 21st and Richard Boof Jones was 34th. Empower Golf’s James Gribble won the 36-54 handicap net category, finished as the top quadriplegic player and finished 21st the overall scratch tournament. A successful campaign all around.
